...so actually Brandon Teena is a huge site of border wars between trans folks and butch dykes and other sorts of queers and no one really knows what their identity was and we can't because of vile hateful fuckers. But there is some danger that calling them a trans man is incorrect, and at best it's simplifying, and the trans community's rallying around them as occupying a static and known identity is actually kind of appropriating.
That doesn't make the review not terrible, but it's important to consider that man may or may not have been the "true identity" of (a) the character Brandon Teena in the film and (b) the actual, formerly living person who was violently murdered in 1993.
