On Monday I went to have my hair styled with a cut and blow dry, at Electric Hairdressing's salon in Reading.
This was in many ways a new experience for me. Firstly, I haven't had my hair styled before, probably mostly because I never had the hair length for it. However, this brings me to my next reason why it's a new experience: I haven't had my hair cut in over two years, since I've specifically been growing it out. My hair's now at a decent length, and I was ready to play with it.
Thirdly, it was my first introduction to how pricey it can be, and the different pricing scheme for styling. Rather than setting a price for the type of haircut or style, the price was set based on who you wanted to cut/style your hair. There were five options increasing in price, from "Stylist" to "Art Director". Since I didn't want to go for a too expensive one on a first go (and probably I wouldn't anyway), I went for the second option out of the five, which was "Senior Stylist". Even that was something like £40 or so IIRC, so, yeah.
Now, as you may all know, I've got naturally curly hair. I've always wished I could have straight hair, although I know it's probably not worth the effort and expense to keep straightening it. However, I did mention that I wanted it straight to the stylist, whose name was Emma. I also said that I didn't really know how I wanted to look, so I said to do it however she thought would look best on me.
And this was the result:

Now, I'm never any good at judging hairstyles, but so far everybody I've shown this to online has loved it! So I thought I'd post and see what everybody else thinks; do you think it looks better good straight, or would curly be better?

Oh wow, that's cute!
I'm rather partial to curly hair -- so that curl at the end is just awesome, IMO. Straight hair does have its interesting moments, I suppose, but for me there's just something I like about the idea of unruly hair going "RARR! I AM HAIR, WATCH ME CURL!"
Yes, I'm a bit odd, why do you ask?

Ooh, that looks really cute on you!
As for whether to go curly or straight, if this is your first time really having your hair longish, I'd say unless you have a Vision of what you want your hair to look like, to not make too many harsh changes to it right away, and to just learn how your hair naturally behaves as it gets longer - hair really behaves differently depending on the length. I just chopped ~8 inches off, bringing my hair back up to chin-bob length, and I'd forgotten how easily my hair gets wavy when it's at this combo of the current length and the air starting to be more summer-humid. (At the former length, it hung very straight, and the weight was really noticeable.)
It's definitely fun to try out different styles, though! But I leave the actual creation of them to people more talented than me. I can braid and plait and twist *other* peoples' hair fairly nicely, but it requires more coordination and endurance than I have for me to do my own.

I do like the cut; the length is great on you!
Straightening takes practice and time; I reached the point where I could have my hair blown dry and flatironed in 20 minutes, but it took me the better part of two weeks to get there. You may be more naturally coordinated than I am, but it's something to consider if you're hurrying to get out the door in the morning.

That looks great! And as people have said - try it out for a bit and see how it looks naturally - a lot of people's hair gets straighter as it gets longer.

Soph, that looks fantastic. The sideswept bang fits you well. :)
As others have mentioned, it can take time and practice to learn how to straighten your hair properly and quicky. Personally, I like my hair stick-straight because it's easier to handle. That being said, I think you would look fab with curly hair as long as you take the time to work with it and figure out how to make it behave.

I could totally see you in curls, but if you like it straight, go for it. An above-the-chin bob may soften your look a bit by drawing the eye up, towards your eyes, but the cut you have now is nice, too. As to whether keeping it straight is too much trouble, that's your call; if you think so, it probably is. It maybe something you want to do just once in a while for a different look.
I say that as someone who's hair was stick-straight in lower-humidity NY (on LI), and who's hair is now wavy and sort of out of control now that I'm in the jungle heat and humidity of FL going on 10 some-odd years. I've bought and tried various straightening and even crimping irons but: 1) I'm not coordinated enough to get around the back, 2) I have no patience at all, especially when it comes to doing my hair, 3) the humidity here and using high heat on hair in such humidity are hair-wreckers, and 4) it's easier to just put it up - for me, personally.
My hair is down under my shoulders and when I grew my bangs out, I came up with a look using some small extensions where I have a corn-braided loose bun up behind a headband- very ethnic-looking, but it takes just two minutes to put together and I'm done. I hate wasting time on my hair. - and you may, too, once you see how much time it can involve :)
