Just updating to let you know that the laptop is still away. No idea how much longer it'll be there. I have Prey on the system and after it got collected I set it to report, and so far haven't had any reports, which either means that it hasn't been turned on and logged into, or that if it *has* been turned on and logged into, it wasn't connected to the Internet while doing so. (Not unreasonable, really, but I was hoping for a report at least just for fun.)

I did get my desktop computer working, but I'm not using it for much for various reasons. Mostly for gaming. So I'll still be semi-gone for a while. I am definitely checking my email though!

Or (it is in a computer shop, after all) someone who works there saw it, knew what it was, and disabled it on you, either for the lulz or for other possibly more nefarious reasons. Just sayin'... *shrug*

Oh, and (edit) have you seen this?

http://shrp.me/docs/dont_use_prey.php

I was googling for how to disable Prey (since that's how my mind works - give me a wall, I try to figure out how to jump over it) but couldn't find any specific instructions except to use SMS or a password, but then I saw that.

I hadn't seen that. It looks like the eval bug is fixed (although I'm using Windows on the laptop so it probably wouldn't have affected me anyway), but I guess the config-with-no-authentication thing is still going to be a problem. I'll need to think about that.

[edit: Actually, thinking about it, I believe Prey on Windows uses a Cygwin-like environment, so actually it would affect me. Erp. Glad it's fixed.]

And yes, you're right that it could have been disabled - I forgot that. That said, it's designed to run as invisibly as possible and it would have run when they logged in, which doesn't give them much time to kill the process before it sends a report. But you are right, they could have done it!
